There is normally a swim on most lakes that gets left alone, due to the abundance of weed in front of it. My advice, to you would be not to ignore this area. With the swim not receiving any attention, the fish will be only too happy holding up in this part of the lake or visiting on a regular basis to raid the natural feed larder that the weed can generate. With a bit of hard work and the correct bits of kit, you will be able to clear a couple of spots, enabling you to present your rig.

The carp are spending lots of time in the upper layers of the water due to the hot weather we are having. A PVA stick with loads of oil will certainly send up a huge food signal to the fish above. By adding fish or vegetable oil to your boilies/particles it is possible to pull these carp down to your baited area via a trail of oil.

It is now mid Summer and most waters in the UK will be in full swing with natural food flourishing. It’s when the water is warm like this that I will look to use more naturally accepted baits like fish meals and trout pellets. These oily baits will really work for you as the warm water will help to break up the oils, filling the water columns with taste and smell. Of course the floater rod should also be at the ready and I have a rod set up and ready to go all through the summer months, plus a big bucket of floaters normally chum mixers soaked in a dip of some sort just lately it’s been the Active-8 syrup.

Check out weedbeds for sun loving carp. A good pair of Polaroid’s and a good vantage point should give their presence away. Set your traps in their entry/exit points and use drop off leads set with a tight clutch to stop them weeding you up!

It is now that time of year where the fish are very active. Spawning is over and they are on the move once more. Overnight sessions offer you a great opportunity for a bite. Travel light, (the Ultralite is my preferred choice) and keep your eyes peeled. The fish will give themselves away, so don’t be too quick to set up. Find them, fish to them and by morning have your photo taken with them.
